Why Does My Tailbone Crack
Read about tailbone pain coccydynia causes, such as trauma, falls, infection, eMedicineHealth does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
The part of the spine/back that I m referring to is the last piece of bone at the end of your spine right above your ass.
There is no pain involved at any point in time, not at the mentioned area, not anywhere else.
I intentionally crack it approximately 1-2 times a week.
I don t have any discomfort, not at the mentioned area, not anywhere else.
It feels good to crack it, but it does not relief any discomfort as there weren t any to begin with.
How I crack it this is how I first found out that I could crack it, and this is how I have been cracking it :
- Sit to the deepest end of the toilet seat. Basically sit normally, and shift your butt towards the back until your anus is just at the inner edge of the toilet seat.
- This causes your butt cheeks to be squeezed up towards the toilet seat s lid. Not that its touching, just towards the direction
- While doing all this, I m leaning slightly forward. About 5 - 15 degrees forward
- Now after positioning my butt correctly, I just need to sit up straight at 90 degrees or even
And voila, the crack is performed.
Basically, I m just worried if I have anything that I should be worried about. Some research online tells me that in some cases it might be an infection or something. Or that it is harmful to continue intentionally crack it.
The last segment of the spine, called the coccyx, is attached to the sacrum by a small, semi-mobile, joint.
So, just like in other vertebrae in the spine and other joints in the body, it is possible to crack that joint.
The reason it feels better after cracking is that the coccyx has probably shifted ever so slightly not enough to hurt, and cracking it puts it back into alignment. Many patients state that they feel better after cracking their neck, back, or even other joints. The coccyx is attached to many ligaments and muscles which make up the pelvic floor. So, it is constantly pulled on by these structures. Which may be why it gets slightly out of alignment.
As to future problems, even though it is only theoretical, many physicians and mothers will say that constant cracking of the joints will lead to degeneration. However, this has not actually been shown to be true. For example, cracking your knuckles will not lead to degenerative arthritis in the fingers no matter what our mothers say.
So, as long as you do not have any pain associated with the maneuver, it s fine.
But if you do start to develop pain in the area, or you are concerned about it, you might need to see a spine surgeon.
I fractured my tailbone when I was a teenager I pop my tailbone at least every day or so. Plus I had many children which put pressure on my tsilbone through out pregnancy so I lay on my bed, on my side with left leg or right leg crossed over the other and pushwith my own hand on my tailbone. After I do that. It feels better relieves pressure
Yep, I myself do the pop/crack thing but it more so right in between the buttocks. I do it differently though. I just stand up straight, jet out my pelvis some and squeeze the buttocks and BOOM, POP, CRACK all sorts of crazy sounds.. many time even loud. I have some discomfort prior but ever so slightly. I should say more tension and knowing if I don t pop/crack said area.. things will get disjointed leading to a major shift in the bones in there. That s when the sciatic nerve will act up, even pretty servery to the point of not walking. So in ways I have to do it and once it happens I know things are aligned a bit better.. and I feel better. I have been doing it for a good 3 years now and no side effects from doing it, just more relief then anything.
